Endocrine Physiology-Pancreas

Human Physiology, LSUHSC School of Nursing, Spring 2021

While students have previously learned about  the exocrine functions of the pancreas in earlier lectures, this hour is dedicated to the endocrine role of the pancreas. After characterizing the absorptive and postabsorptive states, this lecture dives into the hormonal control of blood glucose, focussing on insulin, glucagon, and glucose counterregulatory controls.
Learning Objectives
  1. Compare and contrast the absorptive and postabsorptive states. Identify which is associated with the anabolic phase vs. the catabolic phase, describe the major energy sources associated with each state, and explain if and why glucose is primarily being stored or released by the liver in each state.
  2. Identify stimulation for insulin secretion and discuss the physiological significance of these stimuli.
  3. Describe the major actions of insulin on muscle, adipose tissue, and liver cells. Explain how insulin carries out its effects on these target cells.
  4. Discuss the actions of the glucose-counterregulatory controls glucagon, sympathetic activity/epinephrine, cortisol, and growth hormone. Describe the stimuli for activating these controls.

Representative Qualitative Course Evaluations

"Their lectures were very well organized and designed to reiterate concepts as you go to help students understand the material well. They also made their lectures interesting which was a nice break from just sitting at a computer from home and watching someone read straight from a powerpoint."

"I loved this instructor as well. I enjoyed her effort into making her lectures. She incorporated interactive text questions in her lecture for the students. This was very helpful along with her simple diagrams and subtitles. She is a great instructor."

"Dr. Cucinello was amazing! I barely had to review her topics because she did such a great job of making sure we understood them during lecture. She gave us lots of practice and review questions that helped a lot. I would have loved to have her lecture more."
